Gear for Autumn Photography
Essential Gear for autumn/fall photography
Tripod-a tripod sturdy enough to carry the weight of your longest lens. I use a Benro Carbon Fibre tripod with a ball head and a 3 Legged Thing L plate. Remember, you will be walking around with your gear so keep it light. Remember to take a tripod key with your. I use a Three Legged Thing Toolz which is ideal for outdoors photography.
Long shutter speeds are needed to create a large depth of field, and at dusk or dawn especially you’ll need a steady tripod to avoid camera shake.
Lens-I would suggest a 70-200 zoom, a 50mm prime, wide angle lens and a long macro lens. Some of the best images taken in autumn feature the tiny details of nature, such a leaf details and fungi. A macro lens will allow you to focus right in on the detail and capture some stunning colour and texture, making it perfect for plant life and the autumn colours.
Filters-A polarising filter to capture deep vibrant colours, a graduated ND filter and a circular ND filter will help with longer exposures, blurring water and enhancing reflections.
Waterproof Cover-Autumn can be quite wet in places so you should also pack a waterproof covering for your camera. I always have a couple of Optec USA plastic rain sleeves in my bag for emergencies. I also have a more substantial Lenscoat rain sleeve.
Clothing-Layering in the name of the game. A warm base layer such as a merino wool long sleeved T, a mid layer fleece or shirt and a waterproof. Remember a warm hat and gloves and wellies for those muddy days
